Prescribing of non-combination colecalciferol preparations by all Sub-ICB Locations

Why it matters: Colecalciferol (vitamin D3) is commonly prescribed both as a combination product with calcium for osteoporosis and as an individal preparation.

NHS England guidance on prescribing products which are available over the counter states:

NHS advice is that people at risk of vitamin D deficiency should consider taking daily supplements of vitamin D, which should be purchased from a pharmacy, supermarket or other retailer. No evidence supports taking vitamin D supplements to prevent or treat Covid-19. People with medically confirmed deficiency may be prescribed vitamin D in line with NICE guidance.

This measure only shows colecalciferol prescriptions which are not prescribed as a combination product with other medicines.

There is significant variation in the price per unit for colecalciferol products. Our Price Per Unit Tool can help identify the most cost-effective options for your practice, although consideration needs to be given to the unlicensed status of some of the products. The links below give some common examples, or you can find more detailed information on your organisation's Price Per Unit page.
